IP joins Eni in capping fuel prices at pumps
Fuel company IP (Italiana Petroli), controlled by Azerbaijan's state energy firm Socar, set a cap on petrol and diesel prices at its stations from Monday, Ansa reported, days after Eni brought in a similar 30-day limit.
Eni's cap fixed diesel at 2.19 euros a litre and petrol at 1.99 euros, reportedly saving drivers 9.35 euros and 8.45 euros on a full tank. IP's limit will be phased in by brand, with the exact price not yet public.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called IP’s move "an important signal" for Italian families, with the government's recent cuts in fuel excise taxes being gradually phased out.
The caps came as the price of diesel on Italian motorways neared 2.50 euros a litre and taxi drivers’ unions said a strike would become "inevitable" without new government action on fuel costs.
Court to deliver first verdict in Giulio Regeni murder trial
The first verdict was due at Rome's Court of Assizes on Monday in the decade-long case of Giulio Regeni, the Italian researcher tortured and killed in Cairo in 2016, Ansa reported.
Prosecutors sought life imprisonment for Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif, accused of carrying out the killing, and 17 years and six months each for three other officers, all tried in absentia.
Regeni disappeared in Cairo on January 25th 2016 while researching trade unions, and was found dead nine days later showing signs of torture.
The case has strained relations between Italy and Egypt for years: a first attempt to try the officers collapsed in 2021 before proceedings restarted in 2024.
Italy deports Moldovan trap artist over highway video
Italy has deported a Moldovan trap music artist called Bratan for allegedly blocking a major highway near Milan to film a music video, the interior minister said on Sunday.
The incident happened this month when the musician, whose real name is Nicolae Novacenko, blocked the road by riding on his motorcycle with a group of around 30 people. The video was posted on his Instagram page.
"In light of the threat he poses to public safety, his residence permit was revoked and he was put on the first flight back to his country of origin," Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said on X.
Italy's hard-right government has been toughening its rhetoric on security and immigration as it gears up for elections next year in which it faces a major challenge from a far-right party that is rising in the polls.
